Tthis standard deals with air pollution control technologies for the removal of gaseous air pollutants and aerosols like sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and halides from waste gases (flue gases) generated by combustion processes. Besides information on the design, construction and operation of the air pollution control equipment, this standard presents practical examples to convey an idea of the overall application spectrum. The flue gas cleaning technologies presented are basically applicable to firing systems and large combustion plants subject to permitting under 13th BImSchV and waste incineration and co-incineration facilities subject to permitting under 17th BImSchV1).
Some of the flue gas cleaning technologies presented are also applicable to other industrial processes, if adapted accordingly. Because of the combination of the waste gas cleaning process with production-specific processes, industrial processes are not covered by this standard (e. g. regenerable processes in the pulp and paper industry). In addition, there are industry- specific VDI Standards for some industrial sectors (e. g. VDI 2094 for waste gas cleanup in the cement industry or VDI 2578 for waste gas cleanup in the glass industry).
It should be noted that the process selection made does not constitute any weighting. Because of the interdependencies between the numerous system- and flue gas-specific factors, the data presented in the charts and tables relate exclusively to the specific application. This is also the reason why a comparative technical and economic evaluation of the individual flue gas cleaning technologies has been dispensed with.
The standard also provides an overview of the theoretical fundamentals underlying the respective removal mechanisms. More detailed information can be obtained from the referenced literature (see also Section 5).
VDI 3927 Part 2 covers the control of further trace air pollutants generated by combustion processes and/or their removal from combustion flue gas (e. g. heavy metals, mercury, organic hydrocarbons).
