Foreword

In case of dispute the German wording shall be valid.

This Standard is approved by the Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung and the Luftfahrt- Bundesamt.

This Standard is only applicable when other standards or documents containing material specifications allow for alternative materials as given in DIN 29895-2.

Increased cooperation in the European aerospace industry has shown the growing need for specifying foreign alternative materials in addition to the German original materials for aerospace applications.

The category classification as defined in the German Aviation Materials Manual, Part I, cannot be adopted for the foreign materials listed in the present standard because these are alternative materials and not equivalent materials1).

The materials of German and foreign origin crossreferred in this Standard are intended for use especially by foreign manufacturers of solid rivets required on European cooperative aerospace projects to enable them in the event of difficulties in the procurement of materials to resort to the specified alternative materials.

The materials quoted in the product standards on solid rivets and included in the German Aviation Materials Manual, Part I, are listed in table 2 together with their mechanical properties. Table 3 cross-refers the German materials with the foreign alternative materials with their chemical compositions.

Materials with varying chemical composition can be brought to the mechanical properties given in table 2 by appropriate heat treatment.

The manufacturer has to make sure that the alternative materials are suitable for the intended use and comply also in the treated condition with the German materials listed in table 2.

Further, when using an alternative material in lieu of the original material stated in the product standard, the manufacturer of solid rivets is obliged to satisfy the requirements for the fastener as detailed in the relevant technical specification.

The requirements for the semi-finished products shall also be met.

Table 1 covers standards of the following countries and their standards bodies to which reference is made in table 3.

1) Alternative materials, as opposed to equivalent materials, may deviate from the original material as to their chemical composition provided that the characteristics essential for the particular application are the sam e.
