The connectors qualified to this specification are intended for use as high-speed data connectors using copper conductor for transmission of signals up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), such as IEEE 802.3 10GBASE-T, over four-pair cabling with cable lengths up to 328 feet (100 meters). This connector is military unique because it is a miniature, high density, bayonet, threaded, breach coupling, environment resisting, high shock, high vibration, high corrosion connector that uses crimp removable contacts. It is capable of operating at temperatures up to 200 °C. It is also designed to withstand 500 hours of salt spray. A full commercial substitute is not available.
