The aim of this NATO standardization agreement (STANAG) is to respond to the following interoperability requirements.

INTEROPERABILITY REQUIREMENTS

To integrate multinational environmental management system (EMS) requirements into the operations planning process (OPP) in order to establish a holistic, cohesive approach to ensuring NATO meets its environmental protection (EP) legal and policy obligations, and as detailed in NATO doctrine, especially the suite of Allied Joint Environmental Protection Publications (AJEPPs). Effective EP cannot be done in isolation; all nations participating in NATO military activities must contribute to the planning and execution of an EMS.
