Organization: MODUK
Publication Date: 28 May 2018
Status: active
Page Count: 42
scope:

Copper alloy and nickel alloy castings are used extensively on submarines and surface ships, particularly where corrosion resistance to seawater is required. For these materials, this Defence Standard provides:

Classification requirements, dimensions and tolerances, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) requirements and general acceptance standards.

Weld repair requirements including qualification requirements welding procedures and welders.

The requirements of this Standard are applicable to castings for naval applications complying with the following copper alloy or nickel alloy material standards:

Nickel copper alloy complying with BS 3071 grade NA1;

Nickel aluminium bronze complying with Def Stan 02-747 Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4;

Nickel chromium molybdenum niobium alloy 625 complying with Def Stan 02-822 Parts 1 and 2;

Copper nickel chromium complying with Def Stan 02-824 Part 1;

Gunmetal complying with Def Stan 02-830;

Aluminium silicon bronze complying with Def Stan 02-834 Part 3.

The Standard may also be used for other copper alloy or nickel alloy castings for naval applications, as called up in the relevant contract documents or drawings.

The weld repair requirements of this standard are applicable to the following copper alloy and nickel alloy castings:

Nickel copper alloy complying with BS 3071 grade NA1;

Nickel aluminium bronze (naval alloy) complying with Def Stan 02-747 part 1 (class III castings only);

Nickel aluminium bronze (naval alloy) complying with Def Stan 02-747 parts 2 and 4 (unless used for propulsors);

Nickel aluminium bronze (commercial alloy) complying with Def Stan 02-747 Part 3 (unless used for propulsors);

Gunmetal complying with Def Stan 02-830;

Aluminium silicon bronze complying with Def Stan 02-834 Part 3.

The weld repair (including welding procedure and welder qualification requirements) of the following copper alloy and nickel alloy castings is the subject of other defence standards:

Materials for propulsors and propellers (see Def Stan 02-304 parts 3 and 5);

Nickel chromium molybdenum niobium alloy 625 complying with Def Stan 02-822 parts 1 and 2;

Copper nickel chromium complying with Def Stan 02-824 Part 1.
