Dieser Teil der IEC 61987 enthält

- eine Beschreibung der Eigenschaften von Messgeräten der industriellen Leittechnik (Gerätetyp- Wörterbuch) zur Aufnahme in das Common Data Dictionary (CDD) sowie

- allgemeine Strukturen für Betriebsmerkmalleisten (BML) und Gerätemerkmalleisten (GML) von Messgeräten in Übereinstimmung mit IEC 61987-10.

Die allgemeinen Strukturen für die BML und GML enthalten die wichtigsten Blöcke für Messgeräte der Prozessmesstechnik. Blöcke, die sich auf einen spezifischen Gerätetyp beziehen, werden im entsprechenden Teil der Normenreihe IEC 61987 beschrieben. Ebenso sind Gerätemerkmale nicht Teil von IEC 61987-11. So werden beispielsweise die BML und GML für Durchflussmessgeräte mit Blöcken und Merkmalen in IEC 61987-12 aufgeführt.
