a) This Defence Standard (Def Stan) identifies the minimum requirements to be applied to lifting equipment used on-board Royal Navy (RN) Vessels and the specific requirements to ensure that the equipment shall be considered 'Fit for Purpose'.

b) The Standard also gives the specific requirements that are applicable to Fixed Cranes, Gantries, Davits and Derricks that are in addition to the general requirements.

c) The Standard also specifies the requirements for Non-Geared Pulley Blocks and Snatch Blocks manufactured from Steel or Synthetic Resin Bonded Fibre (SRBF) for use with steel or fibre rope.
