Organization: GMNA
Publication Date: 1 August 2019
Status: active
Page Count: 3
scope:

This specification covers the qualification and performance requirements of low solids, high bake, solventborne basecoat (BC) technologies that may be applied to either flexible or rigid substrates. These basecoats can be used under one (1) component or two (2) component clearcoats.

Material Description.

Each combination of specific basecoat and clearcoat must be tested and approved as a basecoat/clearcoat topcoat system. The individual components are not interchangeable. In addition, the topcoat system is part of the total coating system and must meet the requirements as outlined in GMW3005, those set forth in this specification, and on the engineering drawings. Validation testing for plant specific layering, ancillary materials, and processing must be conducted prior to release. The nominal bake for this topcoat system is 25 minutes at 154 °C (310 °F) substrate temperature. Volume non-volatile solids range of this technology is typically 10% to 25%.

Symbols.

Not applicable.

Applicability.

These topcoats are designed to be applied over a baked primer.

Remarks.
