scope:
This specification applies to all works on LU that contains elements that will form part of, interface with or otherwise impact, the deep tube tunnel and shaft assets.
The definition of which assets form part of the deep tube tunnel catalogue are provided in LU standard S1055 'Deep Tube Tunnels and Shafts' and includes the following:
a) Running tunnels
b) Cross passages between running tunnels
c) Step plate junctions
d) Crossover tunnels
e) Depot approach tunnels (e.g. London Road)
f) Overrun tunnels
g) Siding tunnels
h) Platform tunnels
i) Concourse tunnels
j) Station passageway tunnels
k) Tunnel headwalls
l) Tunnel ringwalls
m) Tunnel openings and junctions
n) Inclined shafts (e.g. escalator shafts)
o) Vertical shafts (e.g. ventilation, access, service, lift and substation shafts)
p) Cable shafts
q) Pump shafts
r) Disused tunnels
s) Disused shafts
t) Other tunnels and shafts constructed by mining methods.
This Specification applies to any party undertaking works to provide new, alter existing, undertaking maintenance or otherwise impact Deep Tube Tunnel assets owned and/or operated by LU.
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to specify the Materials and Workmanship (M&W) to be used for deep tube tunnels and shafts on London Underground (LU).
The format of this M&W specification follows that of the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition 2010, highlighting only any differences, clarifications, omissions or additions that are necessary when applying this specification to works on LU.
The aim of this document is to avoid the need for bespoke specifications to be written for each project relating to LU deep tube tunnels and shafts and to assist in the development of generic products and methodologies that can be applied to provide a consistent approach to the construction and maintenance of these structures.
Note: The LU Deep Tube Tunnels Material and Workmanship Specification is an amalgamation of this document and the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition.
It can be put together by taking the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition and making the additions, modifications and omissions stated within this document. Compliance will be judged against the composite specification.
Throughout the remainder of this document the term "BTS Specification" is taken to refer to the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition 2010.
