MODUK - DEF STAN 61-12: PART 24

Wires, Cords, and Cables, Electrical - Metric Units Part 24: Wires and Cables, Lightweight, Taped Insulation, 150 Degrees C Silver Plated and 260 Degrees C Nickel Plated Conductors

inactive, Most Current
Organization: MODUK
Publication Date: 23 December 1987
Status: inactive
Page Count: 90
scope:

This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for a range of lightweight wires and cables primarily intended for aircraft wiring. Type 1 wires, in sizes 26 to 16 inclusive, have thin wall insulation with a minimum radial thickness of 0.095 mm consisting of two lapped tapes of dielectric material. If not used under enclosed conditions this type will need suitable protection.

Type 2 wires have insulation with a minimum radial thickness of 0.15 mm for sizes 26 to 12 inclusive and 0.24 mm for sizes 10 to 00 inclusive consisting of two lapped tapes of dielectric material. This type is considered to be suitable for wiring without additional protection.

Both types 1 and 2 wires and cables are suitable for use where the potential between conductors, or between a conductor and the equipment structure, or between a conductor and a metal braid surrounding the cables does not exceed 600 V (rms), where the frequency does not exceed 2000 Hz and where the combination of ambient temperature and temperature rise due to the current produces a stabilized conductor temperature not exceeding 150OC for silver plated conductors and 260OC for nickel plated conductors.

These wires and cables are suitable for fixed wiring at temperatures down to -75OC and remain flexible at this temperature. The life of the wires and cables shall be greater than 20 years of 50 000 flying hours, whichever is the shorter. These wires and cables do not support combustion.

The wires and cables are identified by the number of this Standard. The wire sizes are indicated by gauge numbers according to the cross sectional area of the conductor. Details of dimensions, etc are given in Tables IA to IX inclusive and in Table M.

Varieties of wire and cable

Wires with silver plated copper or silver plated copper alloy and nickel plated copper or nickel plated copper alloy conductors in sizes from 26 to 00 inclusive for Type 2 and 26 to 16 inclusive for Type 1.

Cables consisting of two, three and four twisted wires as defined in clause 1.2.1, in wire sizes from 26 to 10 inclusive for cables with Type 2 cores and 26 to 18 inclusive for cables with Type 1 cores.

Cables consisting of two, three or four unscreened wires as defined in clause 1.2.1 laid up and jacketed. Wire sizes range from 26 to 16 inclusive for cables with Type 2 cores and 26 to 18 inclusive for cables with Type 1 cores.

Cables having a wire as defined in clause 1.2.1, metal braided with silver or nickel plated copper strands, and jacketed. Wire sizes range from 26 to 16 inclusive for both Type 1 and 2 cored cables.

Cables with two, three or four unscreened wires as defined in clause 1.2.1 laid up, collectively metal braided with silver or nickel plated copper strands, and jacketed. Wire sizes range from 26 to 16 inclusive for both Type 1 and 2 cored cables.
