PB-FREE ELECTRONICS RISKS & MITIGATIONS

AIM

The aim of this NATO standardization recommendation (STANREC) is to list recommended practices regarding:

following the European Union legislation on Restriction of Hazardous Substances, related legislation, and the global shift it instigated, the electronics supply industry is adopting lead (Pb) free materials and processes in their manufactured and assembled electronics products. Although excluded from such legislation, military systems are nonetheless affected, and such Pb-free electronic assemblies are being introduced into the inventories of manufacturers, who must make a determination as to whether to use them, reject them, or rework them. This decision process is driven by the fact that the use of Pb-free electronics poses a potential product risk and could compromise end product reliability when subjected to harsh environments and long service life-times common to defense systems.

This STANREC avails NATO of best practices in the mitigation of the impacts of Pb-free electronics in defense systems.
