Preface

This Proceedings contains 12 papers presented at the 13th Great Lakes Geotechnical and Gcoenvironmcntal Conference (GLGGC) held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, May 2005. Since major transportation infrastructure reconstruction was taking place in Milwaukee at the time of the conference, the conference theme addressed the role of geotechnical engineering in transportation infrastructure. The S810 million Marquette Interchange Project in the heart of downtown Milwaukee connects interstate highways 1 43, 1-94, and 1-794. The role of geotechnical engineering in such projects is significant. The conference was designed as a forum for discussion of the latest advances in geotechnical engineering applications for transportation infrastructure including earth retaining structures, deep foundations, and geotechnical /pavement engineering.

Each paper published in this Proceedings was peer reviewed by at least one reviewer before being accepted for publication. The peer review was conducted in accordance with the Geo- Institute standards and practices. All papers are eligible for discussion in the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and for ASCE award nomination.
