Publication Date: 1 October 2009
Status: active
Page Count: 22
ICS Code (Paints and varnishes): 87.040
scope:

In many areas (e.g. automotive/industrial/synthetic coatings) the materials used are adapted to the specific application equipment and technologies of the user. Coating materials are, therefore, to be understood as semi-manufactured products that only receive their final form in combination with specific application methods and processes. This is decisive for quality evaluation of the finished product. The current procedure aims to define standards for evaluation of coatings in research, development and production with regard to their suitability and safety for industrial processes. The procedure is also concerned with fault analysis. As properties of coatings depend on thickness, coating systems of increasing thickness are applied to a test panel under predefined conditions. The following characteristics are measured: - thickness of paint layer in accordance with ISO 2808; - surface structure; - colour in accordance with DIN 6175-1 or DIN 6175-2; - gloss in accordance with ISO 2813 (optional). In combination with visual assessment, the following properties are determined: - colour stability, process hiding, overspray absorption, resolving, mottling, surface structure, and wetting - sagging, boiling, and pinholing. This part of the standards document comprises standards for colour stability, process hiding, overspray absorption, resolving, mottling, surface structure, and wetting.
