This guideline sets forth recommended design criteria, components, and the specifications for traditional "Franklin Rod" type lightning protection systems installed on field erected water cooling towers. Prefabricated metal "package units" or temporary units are not included as part of this document.
Refer to the current edition of NFPA-780, Annex H entitled "Lightning Risk Assessment" which calculates the potential for lightning strike which can provide the planner valuable information in determining an investment to loss ratio.
Purpose - The purpose of this standard is to provide for the correct selection of materials and installation procedures of lightning protection systems as well as for the safety of persons and/or property from the hazards associated with exposure to lightning.
Listed, Labeled or Approved Components - Where fittings, devices or other components required by this guideline are available as listed or labeled, such components should be used.
