Dieser Teil der IEC 61756 enthält allgemeine Angaben über Schnittstellen für Einzelfasermanagementsysteme (FMS). Er enthält Begriffe und die Regeln, nach denen eine Schnittstellennorm für Einzelfasermanagementsysteme erstellt wird.

Diese Norm ermöglicht sowohl die Verwendung von Einmoden- als auch Mehrmoden-Lichtwellenleitern und deckt die Lichtwellenleiterkabel aller IEC-Normen mit ihren unterschiedlichen LWL-Aufnahmekapazitäten, Kabeltypen und -Ausführungen ab.

Abdichtanforderungen gegenüber Flüssigkeiten, Gas oder Staub am Kabeleingangspunkt oder Kabelelementausgang werden von dieser Norm nicht abgedeckt.
