scope:
This business process sets out:
a) the arrangements for the provision of first aid in the workplace or at site of work; and
b) the method for assessing risks to determine what first aid equipment and facilities are required.
It applies to all staffed Network Rail workplaces, sites of work and employees, regardless of function or location.
NOTE: Workplaces include vehicles owned or long term leased by Network Rail but excluding company cars and short term hire cars.
Purpose
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations requires employers to provide employees with access to suitable and sufficient first aid equipment and facilities while they are at work.
NOTE 1: 'At work' includes situations where shift work is undertaken out of normal office hours.
NOTE 2: 'Suitable and sufficient' is determined by risk assessing the severity of injuries that could potentially occur at a workplace.
This business process:
a) provides an effective and consistent process for the provision of first aid in accordance with relevant legislation; and
b) mitigates the risk of insufficient first aid provision to manage illness or injury.
