PURPOSE

This regulation prescribes standard data elements, codes, formats, documents, forms, rules, methods, and procedures required by DOD Components, other United States (US) Government Agencies/civil authorities, and users of the Canada-United States Integrated Lines of Communication in the transportation and movement of the movement of human remains to, within, and outside the Defense Transportation System (DTS).

Defense Transportation Regulation (DTR) procedures apply to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA), Coast Guard, General Services Administration (GSA), United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) and its Transportation Component Commands (TCCs), and other activities/agencies using the DTS. In some cases, when moving human remains by commercial carriers, only selected procedures and data elements are used.
