This standard closes a series of definitional gaps which have up to now led to misunderstandings even in discussions between professionals, in applications, in the stipulation of requirement profiles, and in descriptions of products or services. A description of the methods for application of energy management can be found in the further literature, but that goes far beyond the definitional scope of this standard and is not the objective of this standard.
This standard provides a uniform definition of the term energy management and is therefore applicable in all the various areas concerned, such as local and regional government properties, commercial and industrial properties, or properties of energy supply companies.
National and international standards have been created for certification of an energy management system or an energy audit (DIN EN ISO 50001, DIN EN 16247-1). Nevertheless it is still necessary to classify the requirements of energy management and put them into practice. Therefore, this standard sets out the links between the objective of certification and the practical implementation of an energy management system.
The series of standards VDI 4602 is intended to provide as comprehensive a description as possible, including terminology in the applications of energy provision, energy distribution and use of energy.
VDI 4602 Part 2 presents examples of the application of the terms in practice.
