Is intended to replace eventually in conjunction with the other parts of this standard the IEC 538 and IEC 540. Gives for this reason in Appendix A cross-references between the relevant clauses in all three publications. Lays down methods for testing materials of electric cables for power distribution and telecommunications including cables used on ships. Specifies conditioning values and testing parameters which are applicable to the most common types of insulating and sheathing compounds and of cables wires and cords.
