Is intended to replace eventually in conjunction with the other parts of this standard the IEC Publications 538 and IEC 540. Gives for this reason in Appendix A a table of cross-references between the relevant clauses in all three publications. Specifies test methods to be used for testing polymeric insulating and sheathing materials of electric cables for power distribution and telecommunications including cables used in ships. Gives thermal ageing methods which apply to the most common elastomeric, PVC, PE and PP compounds.
