Purpose and Scope of the Document

This document describes a collection of Aircraft Network Services (ANS) and Network Server System (NSS) functions that are suitable for installation in all types of aircraft. It defines network services intended for both aircraft and cabin installations that will manage and maintain the NSS in a common way. This document describes methods for the aircraft to effectively communicate with ground-based information management systems.

Managing the aircraft NSS infrastructure in a common way is in the airline's interest. Common network management reduces maintenance costs. It provides the flexibility to add new functions or components.

This document represents a unique type of ARINC Standard. It describes a collection of network infrastructure functions and management services. It stops short of defining physical form and fit. The functions and services described can be packaged in any of a number of ways to satisfy airline user needs. One example is the 2-MCU building-blocks defined in ARINC Characteristic 763A: Network Server System (NSS) Form and Fit Definition.
