Purpose of Document

This document defines the airline industry standards for the Electronic Distribution of Software (EDS). It describes the common principles and rules to be applied when transferring software (typically Field Loadable Software) between organizations. These principles and rules are intended to ensure compatibility and interoperability. This includes file naming, content, labeling, compression, encryption, authentication, and formatting "packages" containing software and definitions of software transport media.

Uniform system and tool implementations enable common (standardized) processes, procedures and support tools. Developers of tools and processes should reference this standard for the definition of Software Package and Media Package content and format.

Applicability

This standard is primarily applicable to Field Loadable Software (FLS) and other software used in aircraft systems, target hardware and support equipment. This standard may also be applied to other data products when it is determined to be appropriate. These additional products may then benefit from the use of the common processes, procedures, or support tools developed to support this standard.
