Good Practice in Human Factors Integration

This manual has been produced to assist in understanding the 'why' that lies behind the clauses in 1-217 and to suggest 'how' its requirements may be implemented. It does not set out to be a complete manual of human factors methods (which will come with the employment of suitably competent professionals). It is intended to provide project managers and other related personnel with enough understanding of what needs to be built into a project plan to address human factors.
The manual outlines good practice in the field of human factors which can be applied to projects carried out for London Underground.
It has been developed to provide practical advice for implementing the engineering standard 1-217, Integration of Human Factors into Systems Development (Revision A1).
The manual covers the activities that need to be applied in designing and integrating equipment to be operated by London Underground staff. This also includes the related aspects of working environments, procedures and staffing.
The most immediate application of this manual will be to 'control' environments and tasks, such as signalling, service control, station control and train cabs. However, there will often be benefit in applying the described principles to other types of equipment such as that used directly by customers and administrative support computer systems.
Where the 'control' environment impacts on customer service, it is important that the end-service to customers is adequately considered when designing the 'control' environment.
For human factors to be adequately addressed, it is essential that it is managed as an 'integrated' part of a project. Hence, this manual is aimed primarily at project managers and related staff. It is not intended to be a manual read and applied only by human factors specialists, who will bring their own professional practices to supplement this manual.
Human factors integration also requires that consideration is given to the characteristics of the personnel who will be required to operate or maintain equipment. Therefore, this manual is also relevant to those who have responsibilities for staff selection, training and the development of operating and maintenance practices.
Its business objective is to support the application of 1-217, ensuring that systems are developed which can deliver required operator health, safety and performance characteristics.
This standard replaces 5-01018-003 A1. The Standard has been re formatted and renumbered. There were no technical changes.
