London Underground heritage signing handbook

inactive, Most Current
Organization: LUL
Publication Date: 1 March 2008
Status: inactive
Page Count: 18
scope:

This Standard applies to all signs that are owned by LU. Unless a sign is judged to be of potential heritage value it should be dealt with through the application of other approved standards and procurement processes (including disposal).

This Standard supports the following LU Policies:

Note: The identification of Policies shown below shall have no material impact upon Infraco or other Suppliers beyond the obligations already contained in this Category 1 Standard. They are provided for LU reference purposes only.

Purpose

The purpose of this Standard is to define the principles and detailed requirements governing London Underground heritage signs. London Underground's signing is rich in heritage artefacts. The procedures concerning the maintenance and renewal of signs - and ultimately decisions on what to keep and what to discard - follow a series of different stages in which relevant bodies and experts are consulted, and conservation issues are weighed alongside practical considerations such as clarity of information and safety. London Underground's aim is to achieve continuity in signing, whereby old signs of character and continued relevance can be maintained within a modern network.
