scope:
This standard applies to any shingle manufactured for use in steep slope roof systems. Testing will include wind resistance, interior and exterior fire resistance, and impact resistance.
Steep slope roofing is defined as a roof slope with an incline of 2 inches per foot and greater.
This standard is applicable for roof covers installed on roofs where the field of roof uplift pressure is ≤ 45 psf (2.2 kPa).
Purpose
This standard states Approval requirements for Class 1 steep slope roof covers. Steep slope roof covers are manufactured in various forms of shingles. Failures of this type of roof covering occur as a result of high wind and hail storms as well as exposure to fire from above and below the roof deck. Class 1 steep slope roof covers must meet the requirements of this standard for wind, fire, and hail.
Approval criteria may include, but are not limited to, performance requirements, marking requirements, examination of manufacturing facility(ies), audit of quality assurance procedures, and a follow-up program.
