Scope and Objectives

The scope and principle value of this material is· to train employees to attack and fight petroleum tank fires successfully.

Fire prevention technology and types of fire protection equipment and maintenance data are outside the scope of this publication but are covered in other publications.

The objectives of this manual are to present the petroleum industry's experience (which has proved successful) concerning the following:

1. Fire fighting agents applicable to fires in and around petroleum storage tanks.

2. Precautions and guidance for carrying out the tactics and strategy of fighting fires in and around petroleum storage tanks.

3. Prefire planning for fighting tank fires.

It should be understood that the material contained in this document is basic and must remain flexible enough to relate to situations as they occur. This publication is not a complete treatise on petroleum storage tank fires, nor is it intended to exclude or limit the use of other tactics, methods, or agents of comparable or proven merit.
