Fire prevention technology, as well as types of fire protection equipment and maintenance data, are covered in other publications and are outside the scope of this publication.

The objectives of this manual are to present the petroleum industry's experience which has proven successful concerning:

a) Fire fighting agents applicable to fires in and around petroleum storage tanks.

b) Precautions and guides for carrying out the tactics and strategy of fighting fires in and around petroleum storage tanks.

c) Prefire planning for fighting tank fires.

It should be understood that the material contained herein is basic and must remain flexible enough to meet situations as they occur. This publication is not a complete treatise on petroleum storage tank fires, nor is it intended to exclude or limit the use of other tactics, methods or agents of comparable or proven merit.
