This guidance applies to station staff in the very extreme circumstance of a hazardous material being released within a station, with the intention of causing mass casualties. It does not apply to the relatively frequent reports of:

  • A single person collapsing on a station as a result of a medical issue, or
  • The use of irritants such as CS gas, Mace or pepper spray which has been released by customers who are acting in an anti-social manner, or
  • An attack on an individual utilising a corrosive substance such as an acid or alkali.

Purpose

This guidance is intended to help station staff take the safest action for themselves and customers in the event of a hazardous material release or chemical attack within a London Underground station.
