This handbook is one of a series intended to help all staff managing LU's track assets to achieve standards and meet LU corporate objectives.

This handbook focusses on managing rail defects and offers the following:

a) A reference guide to relevant track standards, technical specifications and guidance documentation

b) A comprehensive list of the terminology used when describing rails and details relating to the numerous loads and stresses to which running rails are subjected when in service

c) A detailed description of common rail defects and breaks

d) A detailed description of the primary inspection and monitoring techniques

e) A summary of the techniques used to rectify rail defects In the event of any conflict between track handbooks and LU standards, the latter shall prevail.

Purpose

The purpose of this handbook is to provide a description of the main rail defects that affect London Underground (LU) and the processes used to manage and mitigate them.

Note: This guidance supplements the information detailed within LU standard S1158 'Track-Inspection and maintenance' and applicable procedures and work instructions.
