The ventilation and air-conditioning system installed in accordance with the acknowledged rules of technology contributes by itself to noise reduction, but this noise reduction normally has to be enhanced by secondary measures (silencers or sound insulation jacket). Noise reduction in the room requiring noise protection or the acoustic properties of the room are determined by the construction of the room in combination with the installed ventilation and air-conditioning system.
Noise control measures shall be considered as early as the building is planned, given that retrofitting is hardly practicable or can only be achieved through considerable effort. Rooms requiring noise protection shall not be directly adjacent to central ventilation equipment rooms. Structural noise control shall be given particular consideration.
This standard describes the noise sources and the noise reduction in ventilation and air-conditioning systems in order to give guidance in acoustic planning and design. Additionally, an approximation method shows how to determine the sound pressure level generated by the ventilation and airconditioning system in the room requiring noise protection.
The calculation of the acoustic properties of buildings complies with DIN EN 12354-5 and describes calculation models for the sound pressure levels generated by building services systems. The calculation is based mainly on measured data characterising both the noise sources and the building structures.
Noise is transmitted from the ventilation system to the building through air and through structures. Transmission through the air duct is also relevant for the indirect noise transmission between rooms.
