scope:

This Standard describes a laboratory test method for face masks that protect against contact with the blood expelled from blood vessels or other body fluids. The test liquid is synthetic blood that simulates blood, etc. This Standard describes a test method for resistance of face masks to penetration by a splash.

The purpose of this Standard is primarily to clarify the test method of materials or certain material constructions used in face masks. This test method does not address the performance of the face masks design, construction, interfaces or other factors which may affect the overall protection (such as filtration efficiency and pressure drop).

This test method does not evaluate the performance of face masks as a protection against contamination via airborne exposure pathways or in the prevention of the penetration of aerosolized body fluids deposited on the face mask.
