scope:
a) Defence Standard 02-872 documents the mandated procedures and requirements for the management of Submarine First Level castings made from Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) to DGS 8520, DGS 348, NES 747 Part 1, 2 or 4 or Defence Standard 02-747 Part 1, 2 or 4.
b) This Defence Standard Part 3 is to be used for the revalidation of Submarine First Level castings made from Nickel Aluminium Bronze to DGS 8520, DGS 348, NES 747 Part 1, 2 or 4 or Defence Standard 02-747 Part 1, 2 or 4, which have had service use involving contact with sea water. This Issue of Part 3 now includes in-service inspections carried out outside of the Long Overhaul Period which were previously covered in Part 4 of Def Stan 02-872.
c) Revalidation in accordance with Part 3 of this Defence Standard is to establish the extent of any Selective Phase Corrosion (SPC), the acceptability of any weld repairs and to determine the remaining wall thickness following final dressing to remove corroded regions. This information will allow the determination of the suitability of the casting for future use.
