This module applies to all known mine entries and abandoned mine workings that are within influencing distance of operational railway infrastructure and have the potential to cause ground movement. This module applies to the Technical Authority and the Regions.

This module does not include the requirements for managing the risk from mining in design and construction, see NR/L2/CIV/191/05.

Purpose

The purpose of this module is to manage the risks that abandoned underground mines pose to Network Rail's existing infrastructure. The main risk being the collapse of mineworkings resulting in ground movement which could impact on the safety or performance of the railway.

This process is designed to help achieve compliance with The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
