scope:
The module applies to inspection of abandoned underground mines by Network Rail(NR). Inspections may be used as a method of monitoring the stability of abandoned mines and can help inform Mining Risk Assessments (MRAs)
This module applies to the Principal Mining Engineer (PME), the Route Asset Manager - Geotechnical (RAM (G)) and contractors engaged in undertaking inspection activities on behalf of Network Rail.
This module does not cover;
a) the inspection of working mines (see NR/L2/CIV/191/08);
b) the design and implementation of mitigation works in abandoned mines (see NR/L2/CIV/191/05)
c) the process for managing risk from surface mines, tips, or lagoons (see NR/L2/CIV/191/03);
d) natural cavities created by dissolution or erosion; and
e) subterranean spaces which are not defined as mines under the Mines Regulations 2014.
Purpose
This module mitigates the risk of a collapse of abandoned underground mine workings resulting in loss of track geometry or support to the surface.
This module helps to achieve compliance with the Mines Regulations 2014 legislation.
