scope:

a. Uniform SMR codes will be used by all DON activities. Each activity will ensure the coding structure and application of these codes is used by their logistics management systems in order to provide uniformity and a means of inter-Service communication of information for multi-Service equipment.

b. This instruction applies to all naval hardware systems commands, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP), program executive offices, direct reporting program managers, Commander in Chiefs Atlantic/Pacific Fleet, in-Service engineering activities, technical support activities, the Naval Inventory Control Point (NAVICP), contractors providing logistics management information and provisioning/item selection functions by or for DON weapons, systems, equipment, publications, software/hardware, training/training devices and support equipment.
