The Def Stan specifies the requirements for the identification marking and colour coding of transportable containers owned by the MOD for the storage, transport and use applications of compressed permanent, liquefied and dissolved gases. It aims to facilitate the purchase of new transportable gas containers and assist in the maintenance and refurbishment of the MOD's existing stock of transportable gas containers.
• It does not apply to containers used in portable fire extinguishers as these are covered in civil standards and shall be labelled in accordance with the requirements of BS EN 3-7 and colour-coded in accordance with the requirements of BS 5306-10.
• It does not apply to medical gas containers since are now leased from contractors and shall be stamp marked in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 13769, labelled in accordance with the requirement's of BS EN ISO 7225 and colour-coded accordance with the requirements of BS EN 1089-3 and/or ISO 32.
• It does not apply to MOD owned diving containers as these are covered in Royal Navy Books of Reference and Publications and shall be colour-coded, labelled and marked in accordance with the requirements of BR 2807(4)(B).
• It does not apply to US Department of Transport (DOT) standard containers.
• It does not apply to self-filled personal use gas containers which may contain various mixtures of breathing gases. However, they should be in accordance with the general principles of this Def Stan as far as possible.
