This guidance covers electric pad, cartridge and electric strip point heaters and should be used by those engaged in preparation of maintenance documentation (e.g. work instructions). The guidance should be used when preparing maintenance regimes and producing associated documentation (e.g. Method Statements).

Purpose

This document provides guidance on the minimum maintenance requirements for point heaters and associated equipment used on London Underground (LU).

Note: Point heating is used to enable reliable point use throughout the winter period. Snow and ice can prevent normal switch movement and can cause serious train service disruptions.

Note: This guidance supplements S1199 'Signalling and Signalling Control - Operation and Maintenance'.
