This Method specifies procedures for testing wood preservatives that are intended for use in wood to be exposed to the weather out of contact with the ground without the additional protection of a surface coating (i.e. Use Category 3B). It evaluates the effectiveness of test preservative systems, relative to both untreated wood and wood treated with a reference system, a standardized preservative treatment or a durable wood species. The method creates water-trapping areas in the units designed to create a high risk of decay.
The method is applicable to the testing of commercial or experimental preservative systems in solid wood and, where suitable, in wood-based products. The method may also be used for testing natural durability.
