Duplex stainless steel - design against hydrogen induced stress cracking
Publication Date: | 1 September 2019 |
Status: | active |
Page Count: | 44 |
scope:
This RP covers the design of components made from duplex stainless steels that are installed subsea and are exposed to cathodic protection, by:
- providing recommendations on loads and conditions that should be considered in the design of subsea systems where duplex stainless steels will be used in conjunction with cathodic protection
- defining other parameters affecting the resistance to HISC, such as surface characteristics (i.e. coating), temperature and specific configurations requiring particular attention
- establishing a stress and a strain design criteria.
Guidance note:
Successful design for the avoidance of HISC is strongly dependent on accurate appraisal of the loads. In this appraisal, conservatisms that are appropriate to the level of uncertainty and associated risks should be applied.
