This standard is built on the foundation for maritime management systems provided by the ISM Code.

As the ISM Code has been developed for the operation of conventional vessels, this standard seeks to add additional requirements to safeguard the operation of vessels utilizing novel technology.

This standard supports DOC holders that want to use management systems to optimize operations that handle functions and/or tasks remotely or autonomously and where it is most effective to handle them.

This standard provides requirements for developing of a safety management system to support the operation of autonomous, remotely operated and remotely supported vessels.

In addition, the standard provides a certification scheme for DOC holders operating autonomous, remotely operated and remotely supported vessels.
