ABSTRACT

Waterside economizers afford an excellent opportunity to reduce chilled-water plant energy use when air-side economizing is not viable, but they are frequently suboptimally designed and controlled. This paper discusses sequences of operation for waterside economizers developed as part of ASHRAE Research Project (RP) RP-1711, Advanced Control sequences for HVAC Systems-Phase II: Central Plants and Hydronics Systems, based on prior art and researcher experience and provides context for the underlying best practice mechanical design assumptions underpinning those sequences.
