Purpose/Material Description.
Polyurethane Flexible - Slab (PUF-S) foam based on Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MD), Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI), or Toluene Diisocyanate/Methyle
Symbols.
Not applicable.
Applicability.
The polyurethane material specified in this standard is recommended for use in automotive laminated seat upholstery fabrics, scrim backing, comfort pads, topper pads, plus-pads, trim pads, insulators, headliners, sunshade, etc. Manufacturing processes may include thermoforming; thermosetting; flame-bonded lamination; adhesive lamination; mechanical cutting; etc. This specification segments polyurethane material into nineteen types. The types are based on material performance and product application, and the types do not address the actual part design. These standards are to be considered minimum compliance. Optimum product conditions for maximum performance may require values different than those shown in the specification, but this will be program specific and part specific.
Remarks.
Recycled or Alternate Materials
Recycled polyurethane materials or renewable materials or alternate sustainable materials may be used for parts under this specification. Animal, or animal-based material (i.e., beef tallow oil) shall not be used in any form to create foam under this specification. The recycled polyurethane, renewable materials or alternate sustainable material shall be pre-approved by Materials Engineering.
Recycled Content material may have post-consumer or post-industrial recycled content that have been approved to GM Material Specifications. Post-consumer material (i.e., end-of-life waste or material), per ISO14021, is generated by households or by commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product which can no longer be used for its intended purpose. This includes returns of material from the distribution chain. Post-industrial or pre-consumer material (i.e., prompt industrial scrap or prime scrap), per ISO14021, is diverted from the waste stream during a manufacturing process. Post-industrial waste is product or material that has been generated as a by-product of a given process which has a form that is significantly different than that of the original material and therefore cannot be recycled back through the same general process.
Reporting Recycled Material Content.
Per GMW3059 and GMW14270 suppliers are required to self-report the recycled content of materials, components and parts supplied to GM in their International Material Data System (IMDS) submissions. Suppliers must report the weight percent range of post-industrial/prec
Renewable includes bio-based materials which are measurable by ISO 16620-2 (i.e., castor, soy, lignin, algae, mushrooms, mango), or reconstructed polyols based on renewable materials.
