This standard is applicable to all new axle counter installations and to alterations at existing axle counter installations.

The standard is based on multi-section axle counters, however the same principles may be applied to other configurations. The standard states the interlocking and MMI design principles irrespective of the technology of those systems or the axle counter type.

Purpose

This standard details Network Rail's generic application rules for axle counter systems and the fundamental design principles to be adopted. This standard relates to the physical attributes that the system should have and technical application of various systems.

This is a high level standard to establish the generic system design principles required to safely manage the provision of axle counter systems for train detection.
