This Standard specifies requirements for utility lighters to ensure a reasonable degree of safety for normal use or reasonably foreseeable misuse of such lighters by users. This Standard applies to all flame-producing products commonly known as utility lighters also known as grill lighters, fireplace lighters, lighting rods or gas matches (hereafter referred to as utility lighters). It does not apply to matches and flame-producing products intended for igniting cigarettes, cigars and pipes.

NOTE 1 Requirements for lighters for igniting cigarettes, cigars and pipes are provided in JIS S 4801.

NOTE 2 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.

ISO 22702 : 2018 Utility lighters - Safety specifications (MOD)

In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21-1.
