This specification covers requirements for current and future needs of data transmission and excludes portable devices such as mobile phones, PDA's etc. It does not cover speech requirements, although reference is made to such in the document.

Purpose

This document provides guidance for the selection of a GSM/GSM-R modem. The modem selected must be capable of transmitting speech and/or data to a defined control point via the public GSM/GPRS networks, or via Network Rail's GSM-R network. The method of delivery over the GSM-R network is by using speech or circuit switched data routes with the possibility of future GSM-R GPRS based applications.
