This instruction applies to all persons engaged in the maintenance and testing of lineside telephones, and connecting tail cables. This document covers the maintenance of telephone instruments installed at Automatic Half Barriers but the Whiteley's PETS units themselves are covered in NR/L2/TEL/30080 and Plessey (Hixon) units in NR/L2/TEL/30089.
Lineside Plug Points and telephones (including SPTs) connected to Tunnel Emergency Communication Systems are covered in NR/L2/TEL/30097. For telephone instruments situated on the operating floor within Operational Buildings see NR/L2/TEL/30083.
Purpose
This telecoms maintenance instruction defines the maintenance and functional testing that Network Rail require for their lineside telephones, and associated connecting tail cables.
The purpose of maintaining and testing lineside telecom services is to decrease the incidence of failures through deterioration and to identify potential failures before they become service affecting.
