The TMT&FIP applies to testing work on all equipment and systems that are carrying operational telecommunications traffic. This includes bearer circuits carried over Network Rail owned infrastructure.

This standard does not apply to train borne equipment where maintained by non- Network Rail staff or product acceptance testing. Health and Safety requirements are not included in this standard.

Purpose

The purpose of the Telecom Maintenance Testing & Fault Investigation Process (TMT&FIP) is to manage and minimise risks associated with Moving Train and/or Loss of /miscommunication of voice and data transmission for Safety and Operational Critical Services (e.g. Solid State Interlocking, Axle Counters, Supervisory control and data acquisition) by making sure the fundamental causes of safety related telecommunications failures are identified and through maintenance testing, equipment is returned to service in a safe and controlled manner and that any replacements are working correctly.
