IEEE - N42.38

Spectroscopy-Based Radiation Portal Monitors Used for Homeland Security

active, Most Current
Organization: IEEE
Publication Date: 21 September 2022
Status: active
Page Count: 44
scope:

This standard specifies the performance criteria and test methods for installed stationary spectroscopy-based radiation portal monitors (SRPMs) used for the detection and identification of gamma-emitting radioactive materials. SRPMs may also have the ability to detect neutron emitting sources.

SRPMs are not designed to operate while in motion. Refer to IEEE Std N42.43-2021 [B4] for information regarding mobile radiation monitors. 6

This standard does not address portal monitors that may have the ability to reduce the effects caused by the presence of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) without the ability to identify specific radionuclides. Monitors with this capability are addressed by ANSI N42.35 [B1].

Purpose

The purpose of this standard is to specify the performance criteria and test methods for SRPMs. Testing is conducted under a set of conditions to determine if an SRPM meets the requirements of this standard. Successful completion of the tests described in this standard should not be construed as an ability to successfully detect and identify all radionuclides in all environments. Detection needs not addressed by this standard may require additional testing, e.g., estimation of the background depression due to vehicle presence, masking, shielding configurations, and climatic conditions outside of those established by this standard.
