This standard applies to operational land that is part of the off-track system that is the responsibility of the Professional Head of Permanent Way Engineering.
This standard defines the requirements for the management of these areas in respect of landscape design and vegetation control to, in the following order of priority;
A. ensure compliance with legal obligations;
B. to proactively manage to protect the safe operation of the railway;
C. and ensure compliance with other obligations, e.g., TfL's, Mayoral and GLA's environmental policy objectives, and TfL Policies and Management System
The standard does not cover clearance and gauging, that is the subject of S1156.
The standard does not cover the requirements associated with the performance and design of track, which are the subject of standard S1157.The requirements for the cess are defined in S1157.
The standard does not cover the management of Low Adhesion, that is the subject of S1189.
This standard must be followed by Permanent Way engineering, and track maintenance teams with responsibility for the vegetation on the operational land adjacent to the track, as well as Suppliers and Contractors when designing, installing, and maintaining the track & off-track vegetation.
This standard must be followed by Civil and Geotechnical Engineers, and infrastructure maintenance teams with responsibility for Earthworks adjacent to the track, as well as Suppliers and Contractors when designing, installing, and maintaining Earthworks.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements for landscape management and vegetation control in the off-track area. It is to provide a balanced approach to whole life management of trackside vegetation in terms of operational, safety, and ecosystem services, in line with current industry best practice.
