scope:
This standard applies to the stages of design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and safe use of all SMVT lifts including firefighters lifts, evacuation lifts and the modernisation of existing lift installations. These lifts are intended primarily for use by Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs).
This standard applies to SMVT lifts being installed to the Specification for Surface Station SMVT Lifts, SPC-LAE-SMVT-3673853
This standard applies to SMVT lifts being installed to the Specification for Sub-Surface Station SMVT Lifts, SPC-LAE-SMVT-3899282
Lifts that are used as a Primary Means of Vertical Transportation (PMVT)shall be referred to as PMVT lifts. PMVT lifts are not covered by this standard; refer to LU CAT 1 Standard, S1093.
Note: For the definitions of SMVT Lifts and PMVT Lifts, see clauses, 3.1.6 and 3.1.7
This standard needs to be followed by those responsible for specifying designing, installing, refurbishing, or maintaining lifts and their environment on the LU network. The contents of this standard shall be followed at all times.
This standard does not apply to the stages of design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and safe use of SMVT lifts in non-operational areas or exclusively in back of house areas.
Note: SMVT lifts installed in non-operational or exclusively in back of house areas may not require all the features required by lifts within operational areas. Therefore, lifts that align to the BS EN 81 suite of standards and lift manufacturers standard designs may be considered with consideration given to LU Standard, S1085 where applicable.
This standard does not apply to lifting platforms, stairlifts or incline lifts. If these are being considered, the Transport for London (TfL) Lifts & Escalator (L&E) department should be contacted for advice.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements for all Secondary Means of Vertical Transportation (SMVT) lifts for customers within operational areas of London Underground (LU) stations.
Note: An operational area is defined as an area within LU stations where the lift will be used by customers. Lifts outside of these areas and not used by customers will be specified elsewhere.
This standard acts as a guide to the application of the Surface and Sub-Surface Lift Specifications and their interfaces. Designers must always refer to the standards applicable to the interfacing disciplines.
This standard also details the maintenance and inspection requirements for maintainers.
